P is for Purple Dead Nettle

Purple Dead Nettle, Lamium purpureum, is another one of those small lawn plants that is easy to overlook–unless you are a squirrel digging around, particularly Miz Flora. Our resident botanist squirrel also likes purple. A lot.

This one is really not something that stands out, but when Miz Flora made me get down and look closer, I discovered it is kind of pretty.

Close up, the newest leaves are very fuzzy, which helps this plant to keep from freezing in unpredictable spring weather.
