Christmas Ferns

Miz Flora thought we should treat you to a look at a fern that stays green all winter, Christmas Fern, Polystichum acrostichoides. This very common native grows all up and down the east coast, not being too picky about sun, water and soil conditions.

We found some in a yard in our neighborhood Miz Flora said I better tell readers that the fronds are laying flat to the ground now that it’s winter, but of course all the new fronds will be upright when they unfurl in the spring.

The plant either gets its name from being green in the winter, or from the little leaflets on the frond that look like small boots.
